Is the 2022 Toyota Tundra Worth Buying?

August 23, 2022

Top Features and Specs of the 2022 Toyota Tundra

Some trucks have a history that's older than your grandmother, like the Ford F-150 for example, which they've been making for like 65,000 years now. That's not the case with the Toyota Tundra - or the Big T, as it's known as for some folks - which has only been in production for three generations, spanning just 22 short years. For years, Toyota hung out on the sidelines watching all the other cool kids play the cool truck games, seeing guys like Ford, Chevy and Dodge owning the market and producing trucks that Americans wanted to buy year after year.

Toyota decided they want a piece of the market too, and thus, the Toyota Tundra was born. It's quickly grown into a solid pickup option on its own merits, but is it worth it to buy? We'll show you today!

Quick History of the Toyota Tundra

Fun fact before we start - almost all auto manufacturers release their new pickups at places like the Detroit Auto Show, Chicago Auto Show, or other big automobile factory test things, right? Well get this - Toyota debuted the Tundra at the Indiana State Fair. Imagine that - there is a reason though, as Toyota actually produces a number of their pickup trucks just down the road in Princeton, Indiana, making them one of the most American-built pickups that are available today.

By 2004, Toyota was starting to change things up for the Tundra, giving it much more power with a V8 option. They were running the Tundra in NASCAR races all around the US, and they were even partnering with big movie studios to use the Tundra in action-packed films like Terminator 3, which is probably not your favorite Terminator movie, but still, it's the way it goes.

Toyota has been so proud of the Tundra over the years, and that's for good reason, because it's had several notable accomplishments like moving a freaking space shuttle around LA in 2008. But we're not here to talk about the past, we've got present matters to look at - so what does the 2022 Tundra bring to the table?

2022 Toyota Tundra Performance and Transmission Features

Toyota is rolling into the Tundra's third generation with some pretty wicked changes compared to past generations of full-size Toyota trucks. For starters, it kicked the bucket on the old tried-and-true 5.7-liter V8 engine; instead, the sole engine option on the brand new Toyota workhorse is a twin-turbo V6 that is rumored to make 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. For comparison's sake, this bests the F-150, whose EcoBoost engine makes just over 400 and 500 respectively. This also means that the 2022 Tundra is the only full-size pickup on the market who will only offer a V6, though it's a really good one.

Pairing this new twin-turbo V6 is a 10-speed automatic transmission, which is gonna keep you in the power band across all gears, regardless if you're cruising down the highway or towing the boat to the lake on the weekends.

2022 Toyota Tundra Suspension Setup and Ride Quality

Switching gears here, we'll talk about the suspension bits that the new 2022 Tundra brings to the table. Toyota touts that the new redesign of the Tundra will ditch the old leaf-sprung system that your grandpa had in his square body. Instead, they're replacing it with a coil sprung multi-link suspension that should prove to make the ride quite a bit better and smoother, and give you more control behind the wheel.

Sources also say that an available air ride option may be available for the 2022 Tundra, featuring electronic control dampeners and allowing you to truly dial in your truck's performance on or off the road.

How Many Trim Levels Does the 2022 Toyota Tundra Have?

If that wasn't enough for you, Toyota's also rolling out the barrel harder than a seventh-inning stretch at a Brewers game, by offering the new 2022 Tundra in six total trim packages. In true Toyota fashion, the 2022 Tundra will be offered in the SR and SR5, as well as the Limited. You'll also have a TRD Pro trim, along with the Platinum edition and the belle of the ball, the 1794 edition. We're big fans of the 1794 - they remind us of High Countries with the saddle brown interior, wood trim, and so on.

Design Changes to the 2022 Toyota Tundra

The 2022 Tundra also brings a whole new design refresh with it, featuring a big grille on the front end, sleek and stylish LED headlights, and some sharp body lines that run along the lower side of the doors, bumpers, and bedside. It's a refreshing change and breath of fresh air when it comes to the Tundra lineup - Toyota has always struggled to find its place in the American pickup market, especially compared to the big three of Ford, Chevy, and RAM, but the new engine, styling, and suspension revamp should prove to be an absolute game changer.
